Conservation and Collections Care Projects

We plan and manage conservation and collections care projects, including on-site coordination of conservators, collections teams, contractors and other specialists.

Projects can include refurbishment and capital works, storage development, collections relocations, rehousing, and collections recovery after disaster.

We can manage an agreed project from planning through to completion, lead specific stages or work alongside an existing project team.

Project planning and management

Services can include:

  • feasibility and options assessments;

  • project briefs, scope development and delivery planning;

  • scheduling and sequencing, including temporary and staged moves;

  • staffing, budget and resource planning;

  • project risk assessment and contingency planning;

  • management and coordination of project teams, contractors and specialists; and

  • progress monitoring, reporting and management of changes.

Managing delivery

We coordinate the agreed activities, manage dependencies, monitor progress against the programme and budget, and maintain communication between those involved. Responsibilities, decision-making authority and reporting arrangements are agreed at the outset.

Plans take account of ongoing collections care, staff availability and the preparation needed before each stage proceeds.

For conservation programmes, this includes coordinating specialist input, schedules and reporting requirements. For moves and storage projects, it includes documentation, tracking, rehousing, handling, access, temporary arrangements and responsibilities at the destination.

Project reviews and troubleshooting

Independent reviews can be commissioned during planning or delivery. We examine project readiness, progress, changing scope, delays, responsibilities and coordination difficulties, and work with the organisation to establish practical next steps.

What you receive

The scope and outputs are agreed for each assignment. These can include a project brief, options assessment, delivery programme, resource plan, risk and contingency plan, or independent review report.

Project management commissions include ongoing coordination, progress monitoring and reporting through the agreed stages of delivery.
